Shunkaen is not a destination, but a place of practice.
Within eight hundred tsubo of garden and sukiya residence, the discipline of bonsai is pursued — daily, quietly — by those who have given their lives to it. A handful of evenings each year, the gates close to the public, and the estate is reserved, in private, for a single party.
春花園は、観光のための場所ではなく、 一道を究める者たちの場。
八百坪の庭と数寄屋造りの母屋に、 盆栽に生涯を捧ぐ職人たちの手仕事が、 日々静かに続けられています。 一年のうち幾晩かのみ、 一般の来館を閉ざし、 この場のすべてを、 一組のお客様のためだけに整える夜があります。

Founded in 2002 by master Kunio Kobayashi, Shunkaen is not a tourist attraction. It is a working estate — at once garden, museum, and atelier — recognised among the highest expressions of bonsai anywhere in the world.
2002年、盆栽家・小林國雄により創設された春花園は、 観光地ではありません。 庭であり、美術館であり、工房である ― 世界における盆栽芸術の最高到達点のひとつとして知られる、生きた聖域です。
Across roughly 2,600 square metres of sukiya-style architecture and quiet courtyards stand more than one thousand specimens. At the centre, in front of the main house, presides a Japanese black pine estimated to be a thousand years old — the masterpiece of the master's collection. Tokonoma alcoves within the residence display antique Chinese pots, calligraphy scrolls, and seasonal arrangements assembled across decades.
約2,600㎡の数寄屋造りと静謐な中庭に並ぶのは、 千鉢を超える名品の数々。 母屋の正面には、樹齢千年と伝わる黒松が中心に佇み、 これが小林氏のコレクションを象徴する一作。 屋内の床の間には、 古い中国鉢や書、 そして季節の設えが、 数十年の歳月をかけて集められてきました。

The most decorated bonsai artist of his generation. Four-time recipient of the Prime Minister's Award, recipient of the Agency for Cultural Affairs Commissioner's Commendation, and an honoured cultural figure of Edogawa.

Master Kobayashi has trained more than 150 apprentices from across Japan and around the world. Some of his works are valued in excess of one hundred million yen. Outside Japan he is known as "the flying bonsai artist," for the demonstrations he has given on every continent except Antarctica.
これまで国内外から150名を超える弟子を受け入れ、 一作品が一億円を超える盆栽を生み出してきました。 海外では 「空飛ぶ盆栽作家」 の異名で知られ、 南極を除くすべての大陸で実演を行ってきた人物でもあります。

Each evening is composed for one party only.
夜は、一組のためだけに、 設えられます。
The garden may be illuminated; the hall set with a counter, or with tea. Whatever form the evening takes, the house is closed to all other guests. What follows is a register of past evenings, offered as inspiration.
庭にあかりを灯す夜もあれば、 大広間に板場を据える夜、 茶を点てる夜もございます。 形はそれぞれですが、 いずれの夜も、 他のお客様をお迎えすることはありません。 ご参考までに、 これまでの夜の記録より、 いくつかをご紹介いたします。

Edomae Sushi at the Counter by an invited Tokyo master
江戸前寿司 ― 招聘の鮨職人による、 その場で握る一席
An itamae of our choosing is brought into the residence; sushi is prepared at a counter set within the tatami hall, course by course, hand by hand.
畳の間にカウンターを設え、 招聘の板前が一貫一貫、その場で握ります。

The Maguro Cutting Ceremony Ōma bluefin, broken down before you
マグロ解体ショー ― 大間の本鮪を、目の前で
A whole bluefin tuna of the highest grade is broken down before the room, presented in the manner of a fish market auctioneer's first cut.
最上級の本マグロを一本仕入れ、 解体の所作を見せながら、 そのまま握りや刺身としてお供します。

畳の間での懐石 ― 季節の多皿、 床に座してお召し上がりいただく
A formal kaiseki dinner curated for the season, served at low lacquer tables in the main hall.
季節を映した正式な懐石を、 大広間の朱卓にてご用意いたします。

Tea in the Master's Chashitsu chanoyu, conducted in private
茶事 ― 巨匠の茶室にて、 静かに一服
A formal or simplified tea ceremony conducted in the residence's tea room, with bonsai placed in the alcove for the occasion.
館内の茶室にて、 床に盆栽を据えた一席を設けます。

Private Viewing of trees not shown to the public
非公開の名品鑑賞 ― 通常は公開されない逸品を
A walk through the estate with the master himself or one of his senior apprentices, halting at trees never displayed during regular hours.
小林氏ご本人、 あるいは内弟子のご案内のもと、 通常は非公開の名品を、 ゆっくりとご鑑賞いただけます。

Master Kobayashi works on a tree before the room — wiring, pruning, or restyling — with running commentary translated as required.

The Garden, Illuminated after sundown, lit only for your party
夜の庭、 ライトアップ ― 日没後、 あなたのために灯る
After sundown the garden is lit; the drum bridge, the koi pond, and the principal trees are staged in low theatrical light for the evening.
日没後、 太鼓橋・鯉池・主役の樹々が、 そっと舞台のように照らされます。
Each evening is composed in private consultation. The final figure is determined by guest count, season, and the bespoke programme you wish for the night.
